Why Ogoja state should be created

ABUJA – ONE of the leaders in Cross River State and philanthropist, Amb Hart Modey, yesterday, said the creation of Ogoja State is now based on the rich historical background of the old Ogoja Province established 1915, which was one of the oldest provinces during colonial rule, based on the huge population, human mineral, and natural resources, and potential.

According to Modey, the region has all it takes to stand alone as a State, which was long overdue, therefore, this time around the Ogoja State should be considered without reservation for creation to promote rapid development in all ramifications.

Ogoja Province comprises present-day Bekwarra, Boki, Etung, Ikom, Obanliku, Obubra, Obudu, Ogoja, and Yala in Cross River State, therefore, the agitation for the creation of Ogoja State is that despite its historical significance, the region remains without distinct statehood, unlike its counterparts in the former Calabar-Ogoja-Rivers (COR) State Movement.

Meanwhile, he (Modey ) called on stakeholders in and outside the old Ogoja Province to throw their weight behind the legislative bill and ensure its swift passage, and he added that Ogoja State would meet the yearnings and aspirations of the people in the area, and have a sense of belonging.

It would be recalled that a bill proposing the creation of Ogoja State recently passed the second reading in the House of Representatives, co-sponsored by Hon. Godwin Offiono and other three lawmakers.

Meanwhile, Senator representing Cross River North, Senator Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe also highlighted the benefits of decentralization, which would empower the region and improve governance.

For decades, the Ogoja people have sought recognition. Now, with renewed legislative momentum, this aspiration is within reach. Stakeholders must collaborate to push this vision forward, ensuring equitable development and self-determination for the people of Ogoja.
